Survival of the Thickest is a new upcoming comedy-drama series written by Danielle Sanchez Witzel, based on Michelle Buteau’s book of the same name. Survival of the Thinnest premieres on Netflix on July 13, 2023 and is produced by Lunch Bag Snail Productions and A24.

Mavis Beaumont, portrayed by Michelle Buteau, is a motivated lady who works as an assistant fashion stylist in Manhattan. The protagonist, a plus-sized African-American lady trying to reclaim her life after a breakup, addresses a number of sociopolitical concerns. Survival of the Thickest is directed by Linda Mendoza and stars Michelle Buteau as Mavis Beaumont, Tone Bell as Khalil, Tasha Smith as Marley and Christine Horn.

With a film version of Michelle Buteau’s book, Survival of the Thickest, Netflix offers a binge-worthy experience. Buteau portrays Mavis Beaumont in the series, living in a cramped Brooklyn apartment as she tries to rebuild her life after a traumatic breakup with her lover Jacque, portrayed by Taylor Selé.

The 45-year-old American stand-up comedian and actor was born on July 24, 1977 in New Jersey. In 2001, she started performing in comedy shows. Michelle Buteau was on Comedy Central towards the end of five years. She then appeared on Netflix’s The Comedy Lineup and began hosting Late Night Whenever!, for which she was named by the New York Times for:

“one of the best podcasts of 2018 so far.”

In 2019, she and Jordan Carlos co-hosted the WNYC podcast Adulting. She also starred in the films Someone Great, Isn’t It Romantic, Sell By, Always Be My Maybe and Tales of the City. The following year, she presented Netflix’s reality show The Circle. Buteau’s collection of autobiographical essays, Survival of the Thickest, was published in 2020. Michelle Buteau: Welcome to Buteaupia won a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Comedy Special in 2021. Buteau was a voice actor on Bless the Harts and portrayed Bree Washington on the BET+ sitcom First Wives Club.
