Tulsi Gabbard is an American politician, United States Army Reserve officer, and political commentator who served in the United States House of Representatives from Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District. She sought the Democratic nomination in the 2020 US presidential election before leaving the party and becoming an independent in October 2022.

Gabbard was elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives in 2002 at the age of 21. Gabbard served in a Hawaii Army National Guard field medical unit in Iraq from 2004 to 2005. She served as an Army Military Police battalion commander in Kuwait from 2008 to 2009. She resigned as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in support of Bernie Sanders’ campaign.
