Tulsi Gabbard is an American politician, United States Army Reserve officer, and political commentator who served in the United States House of Representatives from Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District. She sought the Democratic nomination in the 2020 US presidential election before leaving the party and becoming an independent in October 2022.
Gabbard was elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives in 2002 at the age of 21. Gabbard served in a Hawaii Army National Guard field medical unit in Iraq from 2004 to 2005. She served as an Army Military Police battalion commander in Kuwait from 2008 to 2009. She resigned as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in support of Bernie Sanders’ campaign.

When Tulsi Gabbard arrived at Lihue Airport on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, she was greeted with a lei made of brilliant plumeria flowers, a small bottle of coconut water, a bag full of mangoes and a series of notifications on her phone. Gabbard agreed to speak at a Memorial Day memorial service honoring soldiers at an adjacent military cemetery. Gabbard has been a member of the Army National Guard since 2003, so many of those in attendance are her colleagues in arms.
In this capacity, she completed a mission in Iraq. And practically everyone present would be one of her constituents; Gabbard was elected to the United States Congress for Hawaii’s second congressional district in 2012.
