How Tess’ Show Death compares to the game

The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 2 Tess Joel Death

Before The last of us‘ premiere, creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann stated that they intended to give fans a faithful adaptation of the critically acclaimed source material, with the core story beats remaining largely the same. The pair also teased some stunning new additions to the narrative, to include the different natures of the infected. Tess’s death remains partially similar to the original Last of us games with certain returning character lines.

However, there were also a number of important differences to Tess’s death in Last of us adaptation. In the original video game, Joel, Ellie and Tess make their way out of the Boston Quarantine Zone, through the museum and into the capitol building in one night. During that time, FEDRA soldiers continue their pursuit of the trio through Boston. When Tess finds that the fireflies are killed, the game plays out in the same way as the TV show. But instead of the infected knocking on the main building’s doors, Tess initially sacrificed herself in a shootout with FEDRA soldiers. Her death happened off-screen in Last of us game, but was no less emotionally impactful.

Despite only appearing in the first two episodes of The last of us, Tess made a significant impact on the story. After Ellie’s immunity reveal, Tess was introduced as a battered and rugged survivor with little hope for humanity, and she became a force to be reckoned with as she led the group across Boston to the State House. She kept Joel in check, forced him to continue with the mission despite his fears, and inspired Ellie’s strength. As The last of us continues, Tess’s final words demanding to see the mission through will motivate Joel to get Ellie safely to the Fireflies.
