On November 23, 1934, Robert Bertram Schwartz was born in Los Angeles, California, in the United States. He is Jewish and an American citizen. Towne grew up in San Pedro, a coastal community. When he was in his early twenties, he wrote a screenplay called The Last Woman on Earth (1960), which was picked up by noted director and producer Roger Corman. This was his big breakthrough. Towne, whose family was Jewish, was born in Romania on his mother’s side and in Russia on his father’s. Helen and Lou Schwartz welcomed him into the world in San Pedro, Los Angeles. His father changed the family name to Towne and founded the Towne Smart Shop, which sold women’s clothing.
Lou then entered the real estate business and moved his family to the gated community of Rolling Hills in Palos Verdes, where Robert attended the Chadwick School. His younger brother is six years younger than him. Towne graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Claremont, California’s Pomona College.

The 39 Steps, a disturbing 1935 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, is Towne’s upcoming endeavor.
