Nemesis’ biggest flaw means Data can’t be in Picard Season 3

Picard Season 3 Geordi and Crusher

To see Star Trek: The Next Generation cast together in a prepared room like the old days is a sight for sore eyes, but it is inevitably sad that someone is missing: Commander Data (Brent Spiner). The beloved android died in Star Trek: Nemesis, sacrificing himself to save his friends aboard the USS Enterprise-E. This means that Data is missing the biggest Star Trek event in decades, which is the reunion of the TNG cast, and his presence is already missed right from the glimpse of our iconic heroes together in Picard Season 3 teaser.

Brent Spiner will join Star Trek: Picard season 3, and he will play Data’s evil brother, Lore. Still, it feels like a consolation prize because Lore is no substitute for Data. The threat from Captain Vadic heralds the biggest challenge TNG the crew will face past their prime, and Data’s positronic intellect as well as his unflinching calm will be sorely needed in the coming crisis. As exciting as it is to watch TNG molded back together in Star Trek: Picard season 3, the fact that a crucial person is missing casts a pall over the reunion due to the foolishness of Star Trek: Nemesis.

Can Data be revived in Star Trek: Picard Season 3?

Data in Star Trek: Picard

A big question that looms large Star Trek: Picard season 3 is, if TNG the crew’s last mission may somehow backfire Star Trek: Nemesis and the conclusion of Star Trek: Picard season 1. Data was laid to rest in a touching scene between the android and Jean-Luc at the end of Picard season 1 and it seemed to be the last word on Data. Yet Picard season 3 is sure to have surprises, and one wonders if Data’s resurrection could be among them. After all, Lore’s presence gives Data an identical physical frame if his positronic mind and neurons (which may still be present in B-4 at the Daystrom Institute) could somehow be transferred to Lore.

Although revive Data i Star Trek: Picard season 3 would undo the poignant farewell he received at the end of Picard season 1, it may be a small price to pay to complete properly TNG reunion. Killing of data in Star Trek: Nemesis was a decision based on the idea that Brent Spiner would no longer play the android, but that was 20 years ago and a lot of things in Star Trek have changed. Star Trek: Picard season 3 promises to be exciting even without Data, but it would undeniably be better if the android returns.
