As audiences continue to clamor for his franchise return, Brendan Fraser has surprised The mummy fans taking part in a double feature in a cute new video. Fraser led the cast in the remake of the Universal Classic Monster film as Rick O’Connell, a captain in the French Foreign Legion who would go on to become an adventurer and meet the likes of the former Egyptian priest, Imhotep, the power-hungry Scorpion King and Dragon Emperor. Although they generally score mixed reviews across each film, The mummy the trilogy became a fan favorite during its run and was a consistent box office performer, with each installment grossing at least $400 million worldwide.
As he continues to garner Oscar buzz for his turn in The whaleTwitter user Niall McGourty has shared a sweet video of Brendan Fraser surprisingly The mummy fans on a double feature in the action-adventure series.
The video sees the star reflect on making the beloved film, including not knowing what the genre of the 1999 film was at the time of production, only for test audiences to score it through the roof. Fraser would also go on to ask if any of those in attendance had seen any of the films, and shared his excitement at learning that a few would be seeing them for the first time.
Will The Mummy 4 ever happen?
With the actor enjoying what is affectionately known as the Brenaissance, and the Tom Cruise-led remake crumbling the interconnected dark universe before it could get going, calls have been made for Fraser to return for a potential The Mummy 4. Fraser himself has expressed his interest several times in recent months to bring O’Connell back to the big screen and admits that while he’s not sure how it would work from a story perspective, he would be open to the possibility if the right story idea came along. The recent resurgence of the adventure genre with Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock led The lost city and Dwayne Johnson’s Jungle cruise has also sparked further interest in a return to old-fashioned nature The mummy movie.
Despite this, the probability of The Mummy 4 is going to succeed, you have to see. Fraser may be returning to the limelight, although it’s unclear if this translates into box office results as what’s being dubbed his comeback film, Darren Aronofsky’s The whalegrossed just $12 million against its $3 million production budget, considered a modest haul by some but an underwhelming one by others compared to other A24 releases and awards season, Everything everywhere at once. Given that Universal is still carefully weighing their options for future Classic Monster adaptations after the failure of Dark Universe and The invisible mans success, they may not be ready to dive back into franchise filmmaking without feeling confident about the sequel’s ability to make money.
